The Thirty Years' War left central and eastern Europe in fragments. The Holy Roman Empire was a mere shell. Its more than 300 component cities and principalities, populated largely by German speakers, proceeded to develop independently. To the east of a line formed by the Elbe River and the mountains of Bohemia, largely Slavic and Hungarian peoples lived under Polish, Russian, or Ottoman overlordship. After 1648, three strong monarchies expanded to fill the vacuum of authority in central and eastern Europe - Austria, Prussia, and Russia.

Directions:
Create a visual that shows chronology, key events, and important people for the country to which you have been assigned.
Ideas for the types of visuals you can create:
- Storyboard
- Flow chart
- Metaphorical story/symbols to help you remember the material. If you choose this format, it would be helpful to include a key or some text explaining the symbolism.
Criteria:
- Must include all of the terms that appear on the study guide for that country.
- Information must be accurate, relevant, and thorough (cannot be missing key links).
- There should be some text, but the text must be limited.
- Must fit on an 8.5x11” paper. You can use up to 1 page, both front and back (or 2 pages, single side only).
- Must be done in pen (purpose: so I can photocopy it if I decide it’s so good that the class should have it).
- Quality of visuals: I will not be grading you on beautiful or complex artistry. Stick figures are just fine. The artistry does need to be clear enough that someone else can figure out what it represents.
- Give the visual an appropriate title that indicates what it shows. The title can be creative or straightforward.
